The Essential Guide For Moving During The Coronavirus Pandemic

With the spread of COVID-19 around the world, social distancing, and stay-at-home orders, one question that is being asked a lot is whether moving is essential at this time. To help provide guidance, we have put together this Essential Guide to help you decide.

DISCLAIMER: Please remember that Sueland Moving & Storage is not a healthcare company and we’re not healthcare providers. We are moving experts and urge you to refer to the Public Health Agency of Canada and other qualified health agencies to serve as your primary source of guidance and information about COVID-19.

Is Moving Essential?

There are essential reasons for needing to move right now, like you just closed on a home or signed a new lease at a new rental property. Many cities will consider the move to be essential if you would otherwise be homeless.

However, if only made an offer to buy a home, talk to your real estate agent or real estate lawyer about adding an addendum to put off closing until it is safe.

If your current lease is getting ready to expire and you want to move, speak to your current property manager via telephone to discuss options, and you don’t want to renew.

For example, you could request a month-to-month lease until you can move, once restrictions are lifted. If you don’t have to move right now, it is better to stay where you are.

What If I Have to Move?

The health and safety of your movers and your family will be the highest priority. We recommend calling to discuss current safety measures in places as well as the following:

  • Make sure to leave out hand soap and hand sanitizer on moving day and have it accessible for your movers.
  • Practice safe social distancing by remaining at least 6 feet away from the movers while they pack and load the truck, as well as unload it at your new residence.
  • Inform the moving company immediately if you or any family member is experiencing any cough, cold, flu-like or COVID-19 symptoms. If so, the movers won’t be able to move you until after self-quarantining for at least 14 days.

Can I Postpone My Move?

Yes, your safety and the well-being of our movers is our highest priority. If you can delay your move, we are happy to reschedule it for a later date and time. If you are not sure of a date that is okay, and we will work with you once you have a moving date in mind.

If You Do Move – Deep Clean and Disinfect Your New Home Before Unpacking

Make sure to sanitize and deep clean your new home before unpacking. If you can gain access to the home before moving day, do a deep clean ahead of time using the right cleaning and sanitization products.

At Sueland Moving & Storage, we understand your concerns as this is a rare time for everyone. We must all do our part together that will make a huge impact on our lives and the lives of others.
