After your professional movers unload the moving truck, it is tempting to jump in and start unpacking right away. However, before you do, now is a great time to make sure your new home has been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized just to be safe.
Tip #1: Wear a facemask until the home is sanitized.
It can seem like a bother to have to wear a facemask while in your new home. Yet, if the previous owners or tenants did not clean that well, you don’t know what germs are still around.
Tip #2: Wear disposable gloves.
When working with cleaning products and touching surfaces that haven’t been cleaned and sanitized, you need to protect your hands. Make sure to change gloves often, like if you take a break to use the bathroom and avoid touching your face even with the gloves on.
Tip #3: Start in one room to create a “rest area.”
Clean and sanitize one room that you can use to take breaks in where you can take off your facemask. The living room is a great spot since your movers already placed your couch and other furniture where you wanted it.
Tip #4: Clean and sanitize essential rooms.
The kitchen, at least one bathroom, and bedrooms are essential rooms to clean and sanitize so you can get unpacked. The garage, basement, guest room, and other bathrooms can wait. Just make sure to wear a facemask and gloves when entering the rooms you still need to clean and sanitize.
Tip #5: Take your time when cleaning and sanitizing.
Many cleaning and sanitization products need a little time to be effective and kill germs. For example, when spraying countertops, you will want to allow a few minutes for the cleaning solution to do its job before wiping it off.
Tip #6: Install a new furnace and air conditioning filters.
Before turning on the heat or air conditioning, replace the existing filters. You don’t know what germs were left in the filters by the previous owners or tenants.
Tip #7: Let in some fresh air.
Open windows and air out the home if it is not too hot or too cold outside. Fresh air will help remove stagnant air and germs that have been trapped inside.
Tip #8: Safely dispose of paper towels, gloves, and other such items used to clean and sanitize.
The best way to do this is to get a trash can, put a trash can liner in it and place the items in there. If you have reusable masks, rinse them out with some anti-bacterial soap and air dry them to give them a quick sanitization once you are done cleaning and sanitizing your new home.
