If you are buying your first home or moving to a new apartment during the holidays, it is important you prepare for your move to make it as stress-free as possible. The last thing you want is your holidays ruined because your move did not go as planned. To help you prepare for your move, our Toronto movers offer these great tips:
Tip #1: Avoid decorating your home.
It can be tempting to put up holiday decorations before you move. If you must have that “holiday feeling,” hang up a few strands of lights to get you by until you are moved into your new home. You can put a pre-lit tree too if your move is after Christmas. Just avoid over decorating it.
Tip #2: Set aside holiday decorations to be loaded last onto the moving truck.
If you are moving before Christmas, we know you will want to get your new home decorated for the holidays as soon as you are in it. By loading holiday decorations last, they are the first off the truck, so you won’t have to waste time searching for them.
Tip #3: Pack up as much of your home as you can as soon as possible.
You don’t want to waste your holidays packing and miss out on this festive time of year. Take the time now to pack up as much as you possibly can, so you have less to pack once it gets closer to your moving date.
Tip #4: Hang up stockings if you have children.
You want to reassure your children that Father Christmas will still visit even though you are moving. It is okay to hang up stockings around the fireplace or in your normal location if you are not moving until after Christmas.
Tip #5: Stick with your family holiday traditions.
Just because you are moving doesn’t mean you have to skip family holiday traditions. Although, you may need to scale them back or slightly later them depending on when you are moving.
Tip #6: Focus on essentials when unpacking.
With the holidays closing in, you will want to unpack essentials first. The rest of your things can wait until after the holidays. By waiting to fully unpack, it allows you to take a break from moving and enjoy this special time of year with your family.
Tip #7: It is okay to decline invitations to holiday gatherings.
You don’t want to feel overwhelmed and like you have more to do than the time you need. It is acceptable to politely decline invitations this year and focus on your move and enjoying the holiday with your immediate family.
Tip #8: Do your holiday gift shopping online.
You should be able to do most of your holiday gift shopping online and shipped to your new home if you move in time for Christmas.
